Eye and Vision Exams from a Bronx Optometrist

So much of your life is dependent upon your ability to see. If you suffer from vision problems, you could find yourself missing out on life. And if you have an eye problem and you’re not aware of it, you’re at risk of it progressing to a point where it’s not treatable. By having an eye exam each year or every other year – if you don’t have any vision problems – you can maintain your vision and the health of your eyes.

Pelham Parkvway Vision Center Vision Exams

At our Bronx optometrist clinic, a series of tests are needed to measure your visibility. A visual acuity test during an eye exam in Bronx, NY is a machine that displays a row of letters at a time. Each row varies in size from one another, and you must inform us of the line you can see and read it to us. From this information, we’re able to determine if you have nearsightedness, farsightedness or both. The result of this portion of our screening helps us identify the strength of your prescription.

Our optometrist will also conduct another vision evaluation to determine if you have a refractive error with your vision, meaning identifying an irregularly shaped eye that causes light to focus improperly on your retina. You might have astigmatism, a condition that occurs because of a football-shaped eyeball. The misshapen eye causes the light that enters the eye to bend in more than one direction. When this happens, only part of an object is in focus. Objects at a distance tend to appear wavy or blurry when you have astigmatism. In some cases, you might notice the same distortion occurs with your up-close vision. This part of our vision exams in Bronx, NY consists of our optometrist showing you two slides, and you must identify which one looks clearer.

Fitting for Contact Lenses or Glasses At your vision exam, if we determine vision correction is necessary, we’ll fit you for a pair of glasses, contacts or both, depending on your needs and wants. Our eye doctor will use a special device known as a keratometer to measure the curvature of the cornea. We may use a corneal topographer, which provides our optometrist with a more accurate measurement because it’s through an automated system.

In order to fit you for glasses, our eye doctor will measure you for frames that should be a tad bit wider than your face. The temples of the glasses must be spaced at an appropriate distance from your face. Our eye doctor ensures the temples extend behind your ears and takes into consideration the bridge and your pupil placement.

Our Eye Exam When you come for a regular appointment, we do an examination of your eye. We test to ensure you don’t have any issues or conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts. Additionally, we test for macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Our doctor will also examine how your pupils adjust to the light and use a slit lamp to magnify and light up the front portion of your eye, which includes the lens, iris, cornea and the back of the eye. Our optometrist might dilate your pupils and use an ophthalmoscope to look at the retina, eye fluid, retinal blood vessels and a portion of the optic nerve.
